Kanzume Monsters is one of those weird, obscure Game Boy RPGs that never left Japan—which is a shame, because it’s got this odd charm to it. You start off picking from three monster types (I went with the plant thing, no regrets), and before long you’re wandering through these tiny pixelated dungeons, recruiting more monsters to your team.

The battles are simple turn-based stuff, but there’s something satisfying about the way your little creatures evolve. The sprites are chunky and cute, and the whole thing feels like a stripped-down Pokémon with a weirder vibe. Definitely one for the retro RPG crowd who don’t mind some menu-heavy gameplay.

If you’ve ever dug through old Game Boy imports, this one’s worth a look—just don’t expect a polished modern experience.
