Jungle Wars is one of those weird little Game Boy gems that never left Japan—which is a shame because it's got this odd charm to it. You're basically leading a squad of jungle fighters through dense, pixelated undergrowth, taking turns to move and attack like a stripped-down strategy game. The sprites are tiny but surprisingly expressive, and the music has that classic Game Boy chiptune grit.

At first, I thought it was just another forgettable turn-based thing, but the terrain actually matters—jungle tiles slow you down, rivers split the battlefield, and ambushes feel legit tense when you don't see that enemy unit hiding behind a palm tree. It's not Fire Emblem deep, but for a portable game from 1990, it's way more tactical than it looks.

Also, the Japanese-only text isn't too bad since most menus are icons anyway. Just don't expect a story beyond "shoot the other guys in the jungle."
