J. League Fighting Soccer on the Game Boy is one of those old-school soccer games that somehow feels faster and more chaotic than it has any right to be. You pick a J. League team (I always went for Kashima Antlers—no idea why), and suddenly you're sprinting down the pixelated field, trying to pull off these wild sliding tackles and bicycle kicks that look ridiculous but feel amazing when they connect.
The controls are simple—just a few buttons—but there's a weird depth to it. Like, if you time your shots right, you can curve the ball in mid-air, and the goalkeepers either turn into brick walls or flail helplessly. Matches get intense fast, especially against the tougher teams where one slip means they're counterattacking before you can blink.
It’s definitely not FIFA, but that’s the charm. The sprites are chunky, the animations are janky in the best way, and the whole thing just screams late-90s soccer vibes. If you’ve got a soft spot for retro sports games, this one’s a blast to pick up and play in short bursts.
