Game Boy Wars is one of those classic Nintendo strategy games that flew under the radar outside Japan. It’s like a stripped-down, portable version of Famicom Wars, but with hex grids instead of squares—which honestly makes the whole thing feel way more tactical. You’re moving tanks, infantry, and planes across little pixelated battlefields, trying to outmaneuver the AI (or a friend, if you had the link cable).
It’s simple at first—just capture cities to fund your army—but then you realize how much terrain matters. Forests slow you down, mountains block vision, and rivers? Good luck crossing those without a bridge. The hex grid makes positioning way more important than in the NES version. I remember losing a whole match because I left my artillery one hex too far forward.
Definitely a niche pick these days, but if you’re into retro strategy, it’s a cool piece of Nintendo history. The music’s got that classic Game Boy charm too—all bleeps and bloops in the best way.
