Gaia Gensouki is one of those hidden SNES RPGs that never made it outside Japan, which is a shame because it’s got this weird, dreamy vibe I really dig. You play as Will, a kid who gets tossed into this whole "save the world from a comet" mess—classic '90s JRPG stuff, but with a slightly darker tone than you’d expect.
The combat’s real-time, almost like Secret of Mana but with a bit more jank. You’re swinging swords, casting spells, and dodging attacks in these big, colorful areas that feel way ahead of their time. The music’s haunting too—lots of synth melodies that stick in your head.
It’s not perfect—some of the mechanics are clunky, and the translation patches floating around are… rough. But there’s something about the atmosphere that makes it worth pushing through. If you’re into obscure action-RPGs, this one’s a neat little time capsule.
