Earthworm Jim on Game Boy is exactly as weird and chaotic as you remember—just shrunk down to fit in your pocket. You start off blasting through alien bugs with Jim’s plasma gun, then suddenly you’re bouncing cows off your head or flinging yourself across gaps with his wormy body. The controls take a second to get used to, but once you do, it’s pure, ridiculous fun.
Some of the levels feel a little cramped on the tiny screen, especially when you’re dodging instant-death pits or those annoying rocket guys. But the humor’s still there—Jim’s goofy animations, the bizarre enemies, that one level where you’re racing a blind salamander. It’s not the prettiest version of the game, but if you’re craving some classic Jim action on the go, this’ll scratch that itch.
Just don’t expect the soundtrack to hit as hard as the console versions. The Game Boy’s chiptunes do their best, though.
