Dragon Slayer I on the Game Boy is one of those old-school RPGs that feels both simple and weirdly deep at the same time. You start off in this little pixelated town, grabbing a sword and some basic gear before heading out to fight slimes—classic stuff. The controls take a second to get used to since it’s all grid-based movement, but once it clicks, you’ll be dungeon-crawling like it’s 1989.

What’s cool is how open it feels for such an early game. You can wander into areas way above your level and get wrecked, or stumble on hidden caves with decent loot. The music’s got that chippy Game Boy charm, too—simple but catchy. Just don’t expect a ton of hand-holding; you’ll be poking around menus to figure out spells and stats.

If you’re into retro RPGs with a rough edge, this one’s a neat time capsule. The Japanese version’s a bit clunkier if you don’t read it, but the gameplay’s straightforward enough to muddle through.
