Custom Robo GX came out for the Game Boy Advance in 2002, developed by Noise. It was part of that wave of early 2000s GBA games that really tried to push what a portable action RPG could be, focusing on small, customizable robots and fast combat. The game built on the foundation of its Nintendo 64 predecessor but was designed from the ground up for the handheld, making it a distinct entry in the series.

You control a small robot from a top-down perspective, navigating through interconnected areas and battling other robos in enclosed 3D arenas. Your main goal is to progress through the story, which involves rising through the ranks of robobattlers, but a huge part of the game is collecting and building your own custom robot. You constantly swap out parts: different bodies, legs, guns, and special bombs all change your robot's stats and how it handles in a fight. The combat itself is fast and tactical; you dash around to avoid fire, lock on to opponents, and manage your weapon cooldowns. The pacing is generally brisk, though some of the later tournament battles can be quite difficult, demanding that you have a well-tuned robo and sharp reflexes. It feels like a quick, satisfying puzzle of movement and loadout management every time you enter a battle.
