Remember that old NES game where you’re smashing ice blocks with a hammer while some weird polar bear things try to knock you off the mountain? Yeah, that’s Ice Climber, and it’s just as janky and weirdly charming as ever on the GBA. You play as Popo (or Nana if you’ve got a buddy), jumping between crumbling platforms and whacking enemies with your hammer—except the controls feel a little slippery, like you’re actually climbing an icy slope.
At first, it seems simple—just climb to the top, right? But then you realize the condor at the summit is a total troll, the vegetables you collect do… something, and those seals that pop out of nowhere will absolutely ruin your day. It’s one of those games where you’ll fail a bunch before getting the rhythm down, but there’s something satisfying about finally nailing a clean run.
Definitely a product of its time, but if you’re into retro platformers with weird little quirks, this one’s a fun slice of history. Just don’t expect it to hold your hand.
