Boktai is one of those weird, brilliant GBA games that makes you do ridiculous things—like actually going outside to play it. You’re Django, a vampire hunter with a solar-powered gun, and here’s the kicker: the cartridge has a light sensor. No sun? Good luck charging your weapon indoors at midnight.
The first time I played, I didn’t realize how much the game leans into this gimmick. Cloudy day? Your shots are weaker. Middle of summer? You’re basically a walking flamethrower. It forces you to plan around weather and time of day, which sounds annoying but somehow works. The dungeons are solid Zelda-like puzzles with stealth bits, and the vampire bosses? You gotta lure them into sunlight or trap them in coffins. Feels like a mix of Metal Gear and Castlevania, but with more squinting at the sky.
Fair warning: if you’re a night owl, this game will bully you into stepping outside. Totally worth it, though.
