Battletoads: Battlemaniacs on SNES is basically what happens when Rare took the original Battletoads chaos and cranked it up to 11. You start off watching some VR demo in Tibet—until, surprise, a monster kidnaps Zitz and some CEO’s daughter, dragging them into the game world. Classic setup, right? Now Rash and Pimple have to dive in after them.
It’s got that same weird mix of beat-em-up action (like Double Dragon, but with more cartoon violence) and random gameplay shifts—one minute you’re punching robots, the next you’re racing down tunnels or riding giant snakes. There’s even bonus stages where you can grab extra lives if you’re quick enough.
Co-op’s where it really shines, though. You and a buddy can team up, but watch out—in one mode, you can accidentally smack each other around, which is either hilarious or friendship-ending depending on who you’re playing with. The other mode keeps things civil, but where’s the fun in that?
It’s ridiculous, over-the-top, and exactly what you’d expect from a Battletoads sequel.
