Ever stumbled across a shogi game and thought, "Yeah, I could probably wing this"? Shingiryuu will humble you real quick. It's a Super Nintendo shogi title—basically Japanese chess, but with way more pieces that move in weird ways. At first, the board looks like someone spilled kanji all over it, but once you get past that, there's actually a solid game here.
You start off against the AI, and it doesn’t mess around—even on "beginner" mode, it’ll trap your pieces like you left them in a bad neighborhood. The cool part? It’s based on real shogi master Katou Hifumi’s strategies, so you’re basically getting schooled by a legend. Graphics are simple (it’s SNES, after all), but the move animations have this satisfying little click when you drop a captured piece back into play.
Not gonna lie, it’s niche—but if you’ve ever wanted to learn shogi without a stern Japanese grandpa judging your every move, this is a weirdly chill way to do it.
