Ys III: Wanderers From Ys is a weird little departure for the series—instead of the usual top-down hack-and-slash, you’re suddenly controlling Adol in a side-scrolling action RPG. At first, it feels jarring if you’ve played the first two games, but the jump button actually makes combat way more dynamic. You can slash, dodge, and even hop over enemies instead of just bumping into them.
The SNES version has that classic 16-bit charm, though the movement takes some getting used to—Adol’s sword swings feel a bit stiff compared to later action games. Still, the soundtrack slaps (as usual for Ys), and the shift to platforming adds some fun exploration. Just don’t expect it to play like the rest of the series.
