Yoshi's Island on SNES is one of those games that just feels different—like Nintendo took the Mario formula and flipped it sideways. Instead of stomping goombas as Mario, you're playing as a pack of Yoshis, each one passing Baby Mario to the next like a very chaotic game of hot potato. The art style’s all crayon-scribbly and weirdly charming, and the controls? Super floaty in the best way. Hold down jump, and Yoshi’s little legs go nuts mid-air, buying you just enough time to barely make that platform you totally misjudged.
You’ll be collecting eggs like some kind of dino hoarder, then chucking them at puzzles or enemies—sometimes bouncing them off walls just right to hit that one smug Shy Guy in the distance. And yeah, Yoshi can’t technically die, but if you get hit, Baby Mario goes flying in a bubble, screaming like you just canceled his nap time. You’ve got a few seconds to grab him before Kamek’s minions swoop in, and let me tell you, nothing spikes your heart rate like that wailing while you’re scrambling to reach him. Oh, and sometimes Yoshi just… turns into a helicopter or a submarine? No explanation, just vibes. It’s weird and wonderful and still holds up.
