Okay, so The Legend of the Mystical Ninja is one of those SNES games that just oozes charm. You start off as this goofy ninja duo—Kid Ying and Dr. Yang—running around feudal Japan smacking enemies with a giant mallet, which, honestly, never gets old. The levels are this weird mix of side-scrolling brawler and RPG towns where you can waste all your gold on carnival games (seriously, I lost half my cash shooting targets before the first boss).
The art style is bright and cartoony, but don’t let that fool you—some of those dungeons get surprisingly tough. And the music? Absolute bangers. There’s something about the way the soundtrack bounces between traditional Japanese tunes and straight-up carnival music that just works. If you’ve got a buddy, the co-op is chaotic in the best way—just try not to accidentally whack each other off a cliff (it’ll happen).
It’s one of those games where you can tell the devs were having fun, throwing in weird mini-games and dumb jokes between all the sword-swinging and shuriken-chucking. Definitely a hidden gem if you missed it back in the day.
