Man, The Chaos Engine on SNES is one of those games that just sticks with you. Right off the bat, you're thrown into this weird, grimy steampunk world where everything’s gears, gas masks, and mutant freaks trying to shoot you. It’s a top-down shooter, but it’s got this weirdly tactical feel—you can’t just spray bullets everywhere or you’ll run out of ammo fast.
Picking your mercenary at the start actually matters—some are faster but weaker, others are tanks but move like molasses. I went with the guy who had the shotgun first, which was a mistake because reloading takes forever when you’re swarmed. The levels are packed with little secrets, like hidden switches that open up new paths or bonus loot. And the co-op? Absolute chaos (in the best way).
It’s tough, no lie—some of those later levels feel impossible until you memorize enemy patterns. But there’s something satisfying about finally clearing a room full of those creepy mechanical spiders. If you’re into retro shooters with a bit of brainwork mixed in, this one’s still worth firing up.
