I first played Tetris Attack on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System back in 1996. It was developed by Intelligent Systems, the same studio that worked on the Fire Emblem and Panel de Pon games. On a system known for its platformers and RPGs, this puzzle title stood out for its different kind of challenge, one built on speed and foresight rather than exploration.

You control a cursor to swap adjacent colored panels, aiming to line up three or more of the same color to clear them from the screen. The main objective is to prevent the stack of panels from reaching the top, which ends the game. Two key mechanics define the experience: you can create chain reactions by clearing panels that cause others above to fall into new matches, and in versus mode, clearing blocks sends garbage panels to your opponent's screen. The pacing is relentless, especially in later stages, demanding quick decisions as the blocks rise faster. It feels like a constant, satisfying battle against a rising tide, where a single well-planned swap can turn a near loss into a cascade of cleared space.
