Super Probotector—or as most of us knew it growing up, the European version of Contra III—is one of those SNES games that just hurts in the best way. You start off with a spread gun (because of course you do) and immediately get swarmed by aliens crawling out of every corner of the screen. The first level throws you right into the chaos—jumping over pits, dodging homing missiles, and praying you don’t accidentally pick up the useless laser weapon when something better drops.
The sprite work still holds up, especially when the screen fills with explosions and those weird, bug-eyed enemies. And those rotating overhead stages? Absolute nightmare fuel back in the day. Boss fights are ridiculous in the best possible way—giant alien brains, multi-legged walkers, the works. Just don’t expect to beat it on your first try unless you’ve got the Konami code burned into muscle memory.
If you’ve ever wanted to experience that classic "90s arcade brutality" but with slightly more forgiving continues, this is it. Just bring a friend—you’ll need the backup firepower.
