Super Play Action Football is one of those early SNES sports games that somehow nails the chaotic energy of football without getting too bogged down in realism. The graphics are chunky, the plays are simple, and the announcer sounds like he's yelling through a tin can—but man, it's weirdly fun. You pick your team, call a basic play (none of that 50-option nonsense), and then just try not to fumble every other snap.
First time I played, I kept accidentally lateraling the ball when I meant to pass, which led to some truly disastrous turnovers. But once you get the hang of it, there's something satisfying about how fast-paced and messy it all feels. The running game actually works, which is rare for old football sims, and the defense reacts in ways that almost make sense. Almost.
It's not Madden, but it's a solid pick if you want some no-frills 16-bit football action.
