Super Nobunaga no Yabou is one of those deep, old-school Koei strategy games where you spend half your time staring at menus and the other half trying not to get your samurai clans wiped off the map. It's the fourth in the series, but don't worry if you haven't played the others—this one throws you right into the chaos of Japan's Sengoku period with a mix of turn-based strategy and real-time battles.
First thing you'll notice? The map's packed with tiny castles and factions, and you've got to manage everything from rice stockpiles to convincing other warlords not to stab you in the back. The battles feel surprisingly tense for a 16-bit game, with terrain actually mattering and cavalry charges that can go horribly wrong if you pick the wrong moment. I lost my first playthrough because I forgot to check the loyalty of my generals—turns out they'll ditch you if you ignore them too long.
It's definitely not for everyone—expect slow pacing and a lot of trial and error—but if you like historical strategy with some real depth, this one's a hidden gem on the SNES.
