Power Athlete (or Power Moves, depending on where you played it) is one of those early SNES fighting games that feels a little rough around the edges but has its own weird charm. You pick a martial artist—some look like they stepped out of an 80s action movie—and fight through a tournament where everyone’s way too serious about their karate gi collection.
The controls are stiff compared to something like Street Fighter, but there’s something funny about the way characters dramatically flip across the screen. I remember the first time I landed a spinning kick and my guy just… hung in the air for a second like gravity forgot about him. It’s not the deepest fighter, but if you’re into retro brawlers, it’s a fun little time capsule.
Just don’t expect to play it for more than an afternoon before you start craving something with smoother combos.
