Lord of the Rings on SNES is one of those weird, ambitious games that tries to do way more than most 16-bit titles. You control a party of hobbits (and eventually other characters) trying to get that damn ring to Mount Doom, with this bizarre mix of real-time combat and point-and-click adventure vibes. The rotoscoped animation gives everything this janky-but-charming fluidity—like watching a slightly drunk puppet show of Middle-earth.
Combat’s chaotic, especially with friends (up to five players somehow cramming onto one SNES). The mouse support helps, but good luck finding one these days. What’s wild is how much it leans into the story—you’ll actually fail and get bad endings if you mess up key moments from the books. Just don’t expect it to play like anything else from that era.
