Ever played Last Battle on the SNES? It's one of those early 90s beat 'em ups that feels a little rough around the edges now, but there's something weirdly charming about it. You pick from a few different fighters—samurai, ninja, that kind of thing—and just start wailing on waves of enemies. The controls are stiff compared to later games, but the sprites are huge for the time, and the music has that classic SNES punch.
First time I played, I went with the samurai because, well, sword. Turns out his reach is decent, but he’s slow as hell. The ninja’s quicker, but you’ve gotta get right up in enemies’ faces. Either way, expect a lot of button mashing and some seriously questionable hit detection. It’s not great, but if you’re into retro brawlers, it’s an interesting time capsule.
You can find it floating around on emulators if you’re curious. Just don’t go in expecting Streets of Rage.
