Ganbare Goemon 2 is one of those SNES games that just oozes personality from the moment you boot it up. You play as Goemon, this wisecracking ninja with a pipe, and his crew—including the weirdly buff Ebisumaru—as they bounce around a colorful, exaggerated version of feudal Japan. The first thing you’ll notice? The art style is packed with goofy little details, like villagers doing weird dances or enemies with ridiculous hats.
It’s part platformer, part beat-em-up, with some light RPG stuff mixed in—you’ll be hopping across rooftops one minute, then suddenly playing a weird minigame where you race in a giant baby carriage. The controls take a second to get used to (why does Goemon slide so much?), but once it clicks, the movement feels surprisingly smooth. And the music? Absolute bangers, especially that overworld theme.
It’s not the hardest game out there, but the charm and variety make it worth revisiting. Just don’t be surprised if you catch yourself humming the tunes days later.
