Earthbound, known as Mother 2 in Japan, came out for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System in 1994. It was developed by Ape and HAL Laboratory, and it stood out immediately for its quirky, contemporary setting compared to other RPGs of the time. Instead of a medieval fantasy world, you explored a version of modern America filled with odd characters and surreal dangers. This was not a typical sword and sorcery adventure.

You control a young boy named Ness, traveling with a group of friends to defeat an alien threat called Giygas. The game plays out from a top-down perspective, moving screen by screen through towns, caves, and strange landscapes. Combat is turn-based, but it uses a unique rolling health meter; if you take a big hit, your health ticks down gradually, giving you a chance to heal or win the fight before your life reaches zero. You also use items like baseball bats and frying pans, and you can sometimes avoid enemy encounters entirely if you are quick. The pacing is deliberate, with a lot of conversation and exploration between the tense, sometimes difficult battles. Playing Earthbound feels like stepping into a weird, funny, and surprisingly heartfelt cartoon that you can actually live inside.
