Crystal Beans From Dungeon Explorer came out for the Super Nintendo in 1995, developed by Hudson Soft. It was part of that wave of action RPGs on the system, sitting alongside other dungeon adventures without quite reaching the same level of recognition.
You choose one of eight characters at the start, each with their own strengths and weaknesses. Your goal is to explore a series of dungeons, moving screen by screen, fighting monsters with a sword or a bow. Defeating a boss causes it to drop colored power-ups that permanently raise a specific stat, and if you are playing with two players, two power-ups appear for you to share. You find health potions by defeating enemies, and the crystal beans themselves act as your continues; lose them all and it is game over. The pacing is deliberate, and the difficulty encourages careful exploration. It feels like a methodical trek through a strange, colorful world.
