Crystal Beans - From Dungeon Explorer is one of those weird little SNES RPGs that never made it outside Japan until fans translated it. You start off picking a party of four characters—I went with the knight, mage, thief, and healer at first, but turns out the samurai absolutely shreds enemies if you can keep him alive.

The dungeons are classic grid-based crawls, but with this oddball charm where everything’s bright and colorful instead of grim and dark. You’ll poke around for hidden switches, get ambushed by floating eyeballs, and hoard those crystal beans like they’re actual currency (because, well, they kinda are). The combat’s simple but snappy—no endless menus, just quick attacks and spells that keep things moving.

It’s got that early ‘90s jank where some mechanics feel half-baked (why does the thief keep tripping over his own feet?), but that’s part of the appeal. If you’ve ever wondered what a Saturday morning cartoon dungeon RPG would play like, this is pretty much it. Just don’t expect a deep story—you’re here for the loot and the weird enemy designs.
