Capcom's Soccer Shootout on SNES is one of those weird, arcade-style soccer games where you can just tell the devs had fun with it. You get this top-down view of the field with little dots for players, but then it zooms in for the action—bicycle kicks, diving saves, the works. The controls take a second to get used to, but once you figure out how to slide tackle without getting carded, it clicks.

There’s a surprising amount of depth here. You can tweak formations, set players anywhere (except the poor goalie), and even play indoor "saloon football" (which is exactly as chaotic as it sounds). Four-player matches with the Multitap are pure chaos—someone always scores an own goal, and the game makes sure you know you messed up with a dramatic replay. The J.League season mode’s cool if you’re into that, but honestly, I just kept coming back to penalty shootouts. Something about the keeper’s dramatic dives never gets old.

Fair warning: all the player names are in Japanese, so good luck telling who’s who at first. Still, it’s a solid pick if you want something faster and weirder than your average soccer sim.
