Blackthorne on SNES is one of those games that just oozes cool. You play as Kyle Blackthorne—basically a shotgun-wielding space cowboy—stomping through a grim alien world full of creepy mutants and traps. The first thing you’ll notice is how moody it feels, with those shadowy backgrounds and that eerie soundtrack. And yeah, you can totally blast enemies from a distance, but half the fun is timing your rolls and dodges just right when they get too close.
It’s not all mindless shooting, though. You’ll hit switches, figure out how to avoid instant-death spikes, and even backtrack a little when you realize you missed a key. Some of the puzzles are sneaky, like waiting for the right moment to jump or using the environment to take out enemies without wasting ammo. The controls feel tight, but don’t expect it to go easy on you—this is classic 90s difficulty.
If you dig atmospheric action games with a bit of brains behind the bullets, Blackthorne still holds up surprisingly well. Just don’t blame me when you get jump-scared by a mutant popping out of nowhere.
