Super Street Fighter II – The New Challengers is the version that finally got it right on the Genesis. Yeah, the colors are a little washed out compared to the arcade, but the speed is there, and so are all the new fighters—Cammy’s spinning piledriver feels brutal, and Fei Long’s Bruce Lee kicks actually keep up with the pace. Chun-Li’s lightning legs sound crunchy through the Genesis sound chip, in a weirdly satisfying way.
What I love is how they didn’t just slap new characters in—T. Hawk’s grapples change up the rhythm, and Dee Jay’s goofy taunts mid-combo actually mess with your timing. The AI’s still cheap sometimes (looking at you, Vega), but pulling off a perfect with Dhalsim’s stretchy limbs against a friend never gets old. That "GO!" voice sample when the match starts? Pure 90s.
If you’ve got a six-button controller, dust it off—this is the one where combos finally click.
