I first played Street Fighter 2: The New Challengers on the Super Nintendo in 1993. It was a Capcom release that felt like a significant upgrade on the console, arriving at a time when home versions of arcade fighters were starting to feel truly authentic. This particular edition added new faces to the roster, expanding the game we had already spent months mastering in the arcades.

You control one of many martial artists, each with a unique fighting style and special moves. The main objective is to defeat all other fighters in a global tournament, one best-of-three match at a time. Signature mechanics include executing special moves with precise joystick and button combinations, like throwing a Hadouken fireball, and building up a super meter by attacking or being hit, which allows for a more powerful super combo. The pacing is fast, and the difficulty ramps up noticeably against the computer controlled opponents, especially in the later stages. Landing that perfectly timed super combo to win a close round provides a genuine rush of satisfaction.
