Rainbow Islands came out on the Sega Master System, a follow up to Bubble Bobble from Taito. It was one of those bright, colorful platformers that felt right at home on the system, sitting alongside other arcade style games from that period. You control one of the two bubble dragon brothers, Bubby or Bobby, who are now human boys trying to save their island home.

You move from the bottom of the screen upward, platform by platform, while enemies descend toward you. Your main tool is the rainbow, which you shoot to create temporary platforms, trap enemies, or collect the diamonds they drop. The goal is to climb to the top of each stage before a rising water level drowns you, which adds a constant pressure. You also hunt for seven hidden diamonds in each world to get the best ending, a task that requires careful exploration and timing. The game starts simply but the pace quickens, demanding quick reflexes and smart rainbow placement to survive. It feels frantic but satisfying when you clear a tricky screen.
