New Strange Mario Bros – Genesis Game

Ever wondered what Mario would look like if Sega had somehow gotten their hands on him back in the Genesis days? New Strange Mario Bros is basically that weird alternate universe where someone slapped Mario into a 16-bit Sonic-style platformer. You’ve got the familiar mustachioed plumber running and jumping through levels that feel like a mashup of Mushroom Kingdom and Green Hill Zone—except the physics are just slightly off, like Mario’s a little too floaty or the enemies move in patterns that don’t quite make sense.
It’s janky, but in that charming way old bootleg ROMs sometimes are. The first level throws you into a grassy area with Goombas that bounce way higher than they should, and the music is this bizarre chiptune remix of the classic theme that sounds like it’s being played through a kazoo. I won’t lie, it took me a few tries to get used to the weird momentum, but once it clicks, there’s something oddly satisfying about it. Just don’t expect Nintendo polish—this is more like finding a weird relic at a garage sale.
If you’re into obscure retro oddities, this one’s a trip down a very specific rabbit hole.
