This NES version of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is the one I grew up with—way tougher than the arcade original, but that just makes beating it more satisfying. You start off picking your turtle (Leo’s my go-to, but Donnie’s reach isn’t bad either), then it’s straight into smashing Foot Clan goons with your katana or nunchucks. The controls feel a little stiff at first, but you get used to it.
What really stands out is the variety—one minute you’re brawling through city streets, the next you’re driving the Turtle Van or swimming through sewers dodging electric seaweed (seriously). The music’s classic 8-bit TMNT, too. Just don’t get too attached to your health bar—those foot soldiers love ganging up on you.
It’s been ported a bunch over the years, but there’s something about the NES version’s janky charm that keeps me coming back.
