About Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles (europe)
I first played Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles on the NES back in 1990. It was a Konami release, and at the time, having a game based on the cartoon felt like a big deal. This was part of that wave of late 80s, early 90s licensed games, where you hoped the gameplay would live up to the characters on the box.
You control one of the four turtles, switching between them on the fly. Your main goal is to rescue April O'Neil and stop Shredder. The game mixes side scrolling beat 'em up sections with a larger overhead map where you drive the Turtle Van. A key mechanic is managing your team; if a turtle loses all his health, he's captured and you need to find him to get him back. The difficulty is pretty unforgiving, with certain sections, like the infamous underwater dam level, becoming notorious for their precision. Playing it feels like a constant scramble to keep your team alive and navigate its surprisingly tough challenges.
