Super Mario World Master Quest 1 is a romhack of the SNES classic that remixes the whole game—new levels, tougher enemies, and some seriously devious platforming. At first glance, it looks like the Mario World you remember, but then you jump into the first level and realize Bowser’s crew got an upgrade. Piranha Plants pop up where they shouldn’t, platforms vanish faster, and those Koopas? They’ve got attitude.

I died more in the first 10 minutes than I did in my entire first playthrough of the original. The overworld map’s been shuffled too, so even if you’ve got Mario World memorized, you’ll still be guessing where to go next. Some of the new power-ups are wild—just wait until you stumble on that one in the ghost house.

If you’ve rinsed the original dry and need a fresh challenge, this is the version that’ll make you sweat.
