Super Mario Bros 4 - The Mystery Of The Five Stones Game

Okay, so this is one of those unofficial Mario ROM hacks for SNES—but don’t skip it just because it’s not Nintendo-made. The Mystery of the Five Stones throws you into a weirdly polished fan adventure where Mario’s hunting down these ancient gems scattered across remixed classic levels. Some feel familiar, others throw curveballs like ghost house puzzles that actually make you stop and think.
First thing you’ll notice? The sprites are juiced up—Mario’s got smoother animations, and there’s this eerie glow around the stones when you find them. Plays like the old games but with little tweaks, like being able to carry shells farther. Got stuck on a vertical climb section until I realized you could wall-jump off certain blocks (took me way too long to figure that out).
It’s short—maybe an hour if you rush—but the charm’s in the details, like how Bowser’s castle has this weird chanting soundtrack that low-key creeps you out. Definitely a solid pick if you’ve burned through the official games and want something that feels fresh but still nails that SNES Mario vibe.
