About Zoids Mokushiroku (japan)
Zoids Mokushiroku came out in 1989 for the Nintendo Entertainment System, developed and published by Tomy. It was part of that wave of late 80s NES games that tried to bring complex, anime-inspired mecha concepts to a home console, building on the popularity of the Zoids model kits.
You control a pilot navigating an overhead map, moving your Zoid from one screen to the next. Your main goal is to explore the land, enter enemy bases, and destroy their core generators. The signature mechanics are the dual combat modes: you engage in turn based, tactical battles on a grid when you meet enemy Zoids, but you also have a separate, real time first person view for exploring the interior of enemy fortresses. The pacing is deliberate, with the overworld exploration broken up by the slower, strategic fights. It feels like a methodical puzzle where you are constantly managing your Zoid's health and ammunition between skirmishes.
