Zen - Intergalactic Ninja is one of those weird, late-era Game Boy gems that somehow makes a ninja from space fighting pollution feel totally normal. You play as Zen, this green-skinned alien with a serious vendetta against Lord Contaminous (yes, really), who’s dead set on turning Earth into a toxic wasteland.
The gameplay’s a mix of side-scrolling action and some surprisingly tricky platforming—those floating platforms over acid pits still haunt me. Zen’s got shurikens, a sword, and this weird teleport move that never quite works how you expect. The levels get pretty creative too, from smog-choked cities to mutant-infested sewers. It’s janky in that classic Game Boy way, but there’s charm in the clunkiness.
Fun fact: The whole thing’s based on a comic book, which explains why the villain’s name sounds like a rejected Captain Planet villain. If you dig weird ‘90s licensed games with attitude, this one’s a trip.
