About Zas (japan)
ZAS is a Game Boy shooter from T&E Soft that came out in 1990. It arrived during a time when developers were still figuring out how to make the small screen feel expansive, and this game tries a few interesting things with its presentation.
You pilot a lone fighter ship, moving upward through waves of enemy craft and intricate, screen-filling bosses. Your main goal is to survive each stage, destroying everything in your path. The game uses a unique transparency effect for some enemy bullets and backgrounds, which was a technical novelty on the hardware. You collect power-ups to enhance your main shot and a secondary weapon, like missiles or lasers, that you can aim in multiple directions. The pacing is relentless, and the difficulty ramps up quickly, demanding precise dodging in tight spaces. Navigating the chaotic, scrolling stages makes for a tense and demanding experience.
