Okay, so Yuu Yuu Hakusho Dai 2 Dan: Ankoku Bujutsu Kai is one of those Game Boy fighters that somehow makes tiny sprites feel absolutely brutal. You pick from Yusuke, Kuwabara, Hiei, or Kurama—each with their own weirdly satisfying moveset (Hiei’s dragon of the darkness flame looks ridiculous in 8-bit and I love it).
The first fight throws you right into it—no hand-holding, just demon energy flying everywhere. The controls take a second to click, but once you figure out the timing for spirit gun shots or Kuwabara’s sword slashes, it’s stupidly fun. Also, the music? All crunchy synth beats that somehow make punching demons in the underworld feel even cooler.
It’s definitely a product of its time—some attacks feel a little janky by today’s standards—but if you grew up with the anime or just love old-school fighting games, this one’s a blast. Just don’t expect a deep story mode; it’s mostly about beating the tar out of people with your favorite spirit detective.
