I first played Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters on the Game Boy in 1998, a Konami release that arrived before the anime really took off in the West. It was a simple cartridge for a simple system, one of those early attempts to translate the card game from the manga into something you could hold in your hands. You controlled Yugi Mutou, navigating the world from a top-down perspective, moving from location to location on a map. The story followed the early manga arcs, so you were dealing with Pegasus and the whole Duelist Kingdom scenario, which felt very different from the more structured rules that came later.

Your main goal was to duel other characters to progress the story. You walked around talking to people, and these conversations would almost always lead into a card battle. The duels themselves used the early, looser rules of the Duelist Kingdom era, which meant things like field power bonuses and offering monsters as tribute for stronger ones were the core mechanics. You built your deck between fights, swapping in new cards you won from opponents. The pacing was slow by today's standards, and the game could be surprisingly difficult if you didn't manage your deck carefully. It felt like a rough but earnest beginning, a genuine attempt to capture the spirit of the card game on a tiny screen.
