If you grew up with the early 2000s Yu-Gi-Oh! craze, this Game Boy version hits right in the nostalgia. The pixelated sprites, the chunky sound effects when you summon Blue-Eyes—it’s all here, just like you remember.

At first, the deck-building feels a little overwhelming (why are there so many Normal Monsters?), but once you get into a rhythm, slapping down a Trap Hole at the perfect moment never gets old. The AI isn’t too brutal, so you can actually experiment with weird combos instead of just copying meta decks.

Dueling against Joey or Kaiba with their signature cards is fun, though good luck not groaning when Yugi topdecks Exodia for the third time. The music’s surprisingly catchy for a Game Boy title, too—that battle theme still gets stuck in my head.

It’s rough around the edges by today’s standards, but if you miss the simpler days of throwing down a Summoned Skull and calling it a strategy, this one’s worth firing up.
