I first played Ys II on the Nintendo Entertainment System back in 1988, a release from the developer Nihon Falcom. It arrived during a time when the NES library was filled with ambitious action RPGs, and this one stood out for continuing the story directly from the first Ys game. You don't see many direct sequels on the platform that pick up right where the last one ended.

You control Adol Christin, a young swordsman, and your main goal is to lift a curse from the land of Ys by finding the six Books of Ys. The combat is unique; you don't press a button to attack. Instead, you damage enemies by running into them at an angle, not head-on. You explore the world screen by screen, delving into multi-level dungeons, talking to townsfolk for clues, and collecting new swords, armor, and magic rings that grant abilities like fireballs. The pacing is brisk, but the difficulty can be sharp, especially in later dungeons where enemy placement is unforgiving. It feels like a direct, hands-on adventure where your movement is your weapon.
