I first played Ys 2 on the Nintendo Entertainment System back in 1988, a release from Nihon Falcom. It was one of those action RPGs that felt right at home on the NES, arriving when players were getting used to exploring large worlds from a top down perspective. You control Adol Christin again, picking up right where the first game ended, which was a nice touch for anyone who had finished the original.

Your main goal is to lift a curse from the land of Esteria by gathering the six Books of Ys. You move Adol screen by screen, and combat happens by bumping into enemies from the side; you don't have a separate attack button. You explore towns for clues, delve into multi level dungeons, and gather new swords, armor, and magic rings that open up new areas. The pacing is brisk, with frequent enemy encounters and some tricky jumps in difficulty, especially in the later dungeons. It feels like a direct, hands on adventure where your progress is measured by the gear you find and the bosses you defeat.
