Ys 1 came out for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1987, developed by Nihon Falcom. It was part of that wave of early console RPGs where you could see the genre starting to take shape, with its top down view and fantasy setting. It felt right at home on the NES alongside other exploratory adventures.

You control Adol Christin, a young swordsman who washes ashore in a land called Esteria. Your main goal is to uncover the mystery behind the six ancient Books of Ys and stop a looming evil. The game is built on screen by screen exploration; each new area loads as you reach the edge of the current one. Combat is distinctive because you don't press an attack button; instead, you damage enemies by running into them at an angle, not head on. You spend a lot of time delving into multi level dungeons, gathering key items, and talking to townsfolk for clues. The pacing is brisk, but the difficulty is sharp, especially in some of the later areas where enemy placement is unforgiving. Playing it feels like a direct, hands on puzzle where your movement is your weapon.
