Xevious - The Avenger came out for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1988, a conversion of Namco's earlier arcade game. You pilot the Solvalou, a fighter that moves continuously over a scrolling landscape. Your main goal is to survive as long as possible, destroying airborne enemies with your standard shot and bombing ground targets like tanks and bases. The dual-weapon system is a key mechanic; you have to constantly switch focus between the sky and the ground. Another signature element is the Andorgen mothership, a large, patterned craft that appears periodically and requires precise bombing to destroy. The game's pacing is relentless, with enemies swarming in from all directions, and the difficulty ramps up quickly. It feels like a constant, tense juggling act between two different battlefields.
