Xenon 2 came out for the Game Boy in 1990, published by Mirrorsoft. It was part of that wave of arcade style shooters trying to fit into a pocket, a time when developers were figuring out how to translate fast action onto a small, monochrome screen. You got a version of the game that was built for on the go play, even if it meant some compromises from the home computer originals.

You pilot a single ship, moving it in all directions to blast through waves of alien craft and intricate mechanical obstacles. Your main goal is simply to survive each stage, pushing forward until you confront a large boss. Two mechanics define the experience: you collect floating pods to purchase weapon upgrades between levels, and the screen constantly scrolls forward, forcing you to keep pace. The game is notoriously difficult, with enemy patterns to memorize and very little room for error. It feels like a tense, focused battle against the screen itself, where every small victory is earned.
