Wrath of the Black Manta is one of those NES games that looks cooler than it plays—but hey, it’s got ninjas, so that counts for something. You play as this shadowy assassin tossing shurikens and flipping around levels that feel like a mix of Ninja Gaiden and a Saturday morning cartoon. The controls are a little stiff, and some jumps will make you groan, but there’s something oddly satisfying about clearing a room of enemies with a well-timed throw.
First level drops you right into a city at night, sneaking past spotlights and dodging guys in suits. The music’s got that classic late-80s synth vibe, and the sprites are chunky in that way only NES games can be. Don’t expect deep mechanics—just run, jump, and hope your aim’s better than the enemy AI. It’s not the best ninja game on the system, but if you’re into obscure action-platformers, it’s got its moments.
