About World Cup
World Cup came out on the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1990, developed by Technos Japan. It was the same company that made River City Ransom, and it felt right at home on the NES alongside other sports titles from that period.
You control a team of soccer players in a top-down view, moving from screen to screen across a large field. Your main goal is to advance through the tournament by scoring more goals than the opposing team. The game has a few standout mechanics, like the ability to perform super shots that are much harder for the goalie to stop, and a unique power meter for your kicks that requires careful timing. The pacing is fast, and the difficulty ramps up quickly as you face stronger international teams. It feels satisfying to finally master a powerful shot and watch it fly past the keeper.
