About World Class Track Meet
World Class Track Meet came out in 1987 for the Nintendo Entertainment System, published by Nintendo. It was one of the games designed specifically for the Power Pad, that big plastic mat you laid on the floor. This put it right in the middle of that era when Nintendo was experimenting with different kinds of physical controllers beyond the standard gamepad.
You control a runner viewed from the side, and the main objective is to win a series of Olympic style track events. You do this by actually running in place on the Power Pad, with different panels corresponding to your left and right feet. Signature mechanics include the rapid alternating steps for the 100 meter dash and the timed, three step approach for the long jump. The pacing is frantic, especially in the running events where your speed directly translates to your on screen performance; the difficulty comes from maintaining a consistent, fast rhythm without stumbling. It feels like a genuine workout, and the immediate physical feedback makes your successes and failures intensely personal.
